JOHN FREEMAN GILL writes the Streetscapes column for The New York Times. A native New Yorker, he was formerly a reporter for the Times City section and the architecture and real estate editor at Avenue magazine, for which he wrote “Edifice Complex,” a monthly column on New York City architectural history. His work has been anthologized in two New York Times collections and has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, The International Herald Tribune, New York magazine, The New York Observer, Salon, and many other publications. He was educated at Yale and Sarah Lawrence.
